Lottery scheduled for affordable senior housing complex

An affordable senior housing complex under construction in Honolulu’s Chinatown — Halewaiolu Senior Residences — will hold a lottery for potential residents on May 3.

Applications are now being accepted for the 155 one- and two-bedroom units, which are available for people aged 62 and older.

Located at 1331 River St., the 17-story, $93.3 million project is spearheaded by the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Land Management and built in partnership with Michaels Development Co.

“Halewaiolu Senior Residences will provide quality affordable rentals for our most vulnerable population – our kupuna,” Milt Pratt, executive vice president of Michaels, said in a statement. “We are proud to partner with Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi and the city Department of Land Management to deliver this much-needed housing for our seniors. We will continue to build affordable housing for Hawaii’s residents because the cost of housing should not dictate whether local residents stay in Hawaii or move to the Mainland.”

Amenities of the development include a multipurpose room, warming kitchen, laundry room, computer room, activity rooms, community garden, walking track and dog park, a recent announcement noted. There also will be on-site property management, and Better Tomorrows, a resident services coordinator, will provide programs for seniors, including financial budgeting, nutrition and health care, the announcement said.

According to the announcement, rents, based on 2022 rent levels, will begin at $735 and go up to $2,352, with utility allowances provided. Rents, however, are subject to change and income limits apply.

Applicants who qualify must have annual incomes between 30% and 80% of the area median income. Selected tenants are expected to move in this fall.

According to the announcement, applications must be submitted by May 3, with the lottery scheduled to be held at 10 a.m. May 3 at 200 N. Vineyard St., in the Oahu Conference Room, Building A.
