Virginia Housing names permanent CEO

Virginia Housing, a Richmond-based nonprofit that helps finance affordable single-family and multifamily housing, named Tammy Neale CEO.

The appointment, announced Monday, is effective April 1. Neale replaces Janet Wiglesworth, who has been serving as interim CEO since Jan. 1and will return to her previous role as chief operating officer.

Neale has been with the nonprofit for 39 years, most recently as chief of programs for the last three years. Before that, she was chief of staff. Neale has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond.

The new CEO fills the role left vacant by Susan Dewey, who stepped down last year after serving in the top stop since 1999.

Virginia Housing, which was created by the state in 1972 but receives no taxpayer money, raises funds through the capital markets to provide low-income mortgages to first-time homebuyers and finance affordable apartment projects. In fiscal 2022, it provided 7,695 home loans for a total of $1.8 billion and financed 5,707 rental units for $829.9 million. As of June 30, it reported $9.4 billion in assets and operating revenue of nearly $380 million.

Thomas Gibson of Alexandria was named chair of the organization’s board in September.
