Kevin Spacey's waterfront Baltimore home goes up for auction

The Inner Harbor mansion that actor Kevin Spacey has called home for years is heading to auction this month.

The elegant Pier Homes at Harborview residence was listed for auction on Monday afternoon by Alex Cooper Auctioneers, which will handle the sale. The auction is scheduled to begin July 25 at 9:15 a.m. on the steps of the Clarence M. Mitchell III Courthouse on Calvert Street downtown. A $100,000 initial deposit is required to bid, with a suggested opening bid of $1.5 million.

The sale is the latest loss for the embattled actor Kevin Spacey, who has lived in the 9,069-square foot mansion that was built by the late developer Leroy Merritt and is considered one of the city’s most elaborate homes. The five-story mansion has six bedrooms and seven full baths with three half-bathrooms and sits on a pier that juts out into the harbor. Recent upgrades include an elevator, sauna, home theatre, rooftop terrace, verandas and a four-car garage, the Cooper website said.

It last sold for $5.65 million in 2017 to Clear Toaster LLC based in Los Angeles, according to state tax records, and has been a high-profile residence for Spacey, a two-time Oscar winner who moved to Baltimore to play the lead role in the Netflix series “House of Cards.” The show was filmed in the city and in a studio in Harford County.

In a June interview with “Uncensored” host Piers Morgan, Spacey admitted that he owed millions and had mulled filing for bankruptcy. He said in the interview that his monthly mortgage payments were $20,230 — and he had defaulted after he was fired from the cast of “House of Cards.”

Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright starred in Netflix’s ‘House of Cards,” a HBO series that was filmed in Baltimore.

Spacey’s public career has faltered since he was accused of sexual misconduct including a lawsuit in which he was sued for allegedly making a sexual advance on a teenage boy in the 1980s in New York. He was acquitted of charges a year ago in London by a jury. He has said that his career halted as a result of the charges and that he had not worked for years.

The auction this month is being conducted under a deed of trust from Clear Toaster LLC that is detailed in the city’s land records for the property, the Cooper auction posting says. The sale covers units 162 and 163 of the Pier Homes at Harborview luxury condominium complex on Key Highway near Locust Point.

The luxury home is a mashup of two luxury Pier Homes properties and first hit the market after Merritt’s death in 2010. It is spacious and has a 75-foot rooftop deck with 360-degree views of the city’s skyline, and was once rented by former Oriole third baseman Manny Machado.

Officials of Alex Cooper declined to comment on Monday on the upcoming auction.
