Topeka, Kan., led The Wall Street Journal/Realtor.com Emerging Housing Markets Index in the third quarter, representing the kind of metro area currently weathering the headwinds of steepening homeownership costs.
Topeka, the capital of Kansas, is one of five state capital cities ranked among the top 20 during the quarter. State-government employment has grown faster than total employment in recent months, supporting the job market in those metro areas,
according to economists at Realtor.com.
