Shenandoah family upset after dog shot by Realtor – Omaha – WOWT

SHENANDOAH, Iowa (WOWT) – An Omaha Realtor dropping by an Iowa property Thursday unleashed a shocking scenario for the owners after the family pet was shot.
Shenandoah Police confirmed to 6 News that the homeowners invited the Realtor in, giving him a tour of the property, about 60 miles southeast of Council Bluffs, around 12:30 p.m. Thursday. As a precaution, police said, the family’s dog had been sequestered to the basement. A family member told 6 News that the dog is an Australian shepherdbeagle mix.
While on the tour, the Realtor asked to see the basement, so the daughter of the homeowner took the dog outside. She told 6 News that she was holding the dog, when the animal started barking and got loose from its leash.
The Realtor had been walking up the driveway to the backyard in order to access the basement from outside when the dog got away from the daughter and went after the Realtor. Police, who also interviewed neighbors who had witnessed the incident, said the Realtor kicked the dog, which kept coming at him — so he shot the dog.
Shenandoah Police told 6 News that the Realtor left the scene without any further incident and immediately called the authorities.
Police were called to the scene, and the matter was referred to the County Attorney. Because the Realtor — who did have a conceal-carry permit — felt threatened, the county attorney said the matter was self-defense.
The daughter told 6 News that the dog did nothing to provoke a shooting and that her mother, who she said is very afraid of guns, would never have allowed the Realtor into her home if she knew he was armed.
The daughter told 6 News on Friday afternoon that the dog survived, but suffered serious wounds. She said the animal was being treated by a Shenandoah veterinarian.
