Real estate agent beats former top-10 tennis star – The Comeback

The Comeback: Today’s Top Sports Stories & Reactions

It’s not often that a part-time tennis player just strolls onto the court and beats a former top-10 player, but that’s exactly what real estate agent Matija Pecotic did this week when he shocked former world No. 8 Jack Sock on his ATP Tour main draw debut at the Delray Beach Open on Tuesday.
Making the story even more hilarious, Matija Pecotic actually went to his day job before notching the huge win and had to ask his boss to leave early for the tournament.
“I had to leave work early today,” Pecotic told ESPN. “I had to send an email to the whole team. [My boss] let me off. I’m going to have to ask for another day off tomorrow.”
Pecotic appeared to have a promising tennis career ahead of him, climbing to a career-high ranking of No. 206 world ranking back in 2015, but complications from surgery derailed his career. At 33 years old, he still loves the sport – he just has to be a little more creative when he trains.
“I absolutely love this game, and I know it’s not forever and I’m 33,” he said after qualifying for the main draw. “I try to maximize each day. I try to train every morning if I can, five, six times a week. Sometimes I train with my boss, who is 70 years old. This week I trained with a guy who is probably in his late 50s. But you find creative ways to work around it.”
After the win, Pecotic will now take on American Marcos Giron in the round of 16 on Wednesday in Florida.
