National health care firm to close Scottsdale office amid job cuts at affiliate company – The Business Journals

A national health care firm is making changes to its Valley office footprint amid layoffs across offices, including its office in Scottsdale.
McKesson Corp. (NYSE: MCK) announced in an all-staff email Wednesday morning that it was cutting 815 jobs from affiliate CoverMyMeds nationwide and converting 1,100 employees to full-time remote work, which was shared anonymously from multiple sources with sister publication Columbus Business FirstAmong the layoffs are 252 Valley-based workers, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification filed by McKesson on Wednesday.
In the email from Kevin Kettler, president of McKesson’s Prescription Technology Solutions, some decisions have been made regarding the company’s Scottsdale office, which is located at 5601 N. Pima Road in the Chaparral Commerce Center. The first was that patient support center employees working at the Scottsdale office who were not impacted by job eliminations would transition to working from home. The result would be the company closing the office for all McKesson employees on April 30.
Team members in Scottsdale and Louisville, Kentucky would “hear more in the coming weeks,” according to Ketter’s email. Texas-based McKesson acquired CoverMyMeds – technology connecting pharmacies, physicians and insurers to get prescriptions filled without coverage friction – for an eventual $1.44 billion in 2017. The company united four prescription tech offices under the CoverMyMeds brand in 2021, according to Columbus Business First.
The company could not be reached for further comment on Wednesday.
McKesson’s office footprint had shrunk over the past years.
In 2016, the company announced it was expanding into 271,000 square feet in a future office campus by occupying two 135,500-square-foot buildings at 5601 N. Pima and 5701 N. Pima on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land. The company pre-leased both buildings and had lease commitments at both properties through February 2028, according to CoStar Group Inc.
Since then, Onsemi (Nasdaq: ON) snagged more than 170,000 square feet in a sublease deal to move its global headquarters from Phoenix to Scottsdale. The semiconductor supplier opened that office earlier in March to house about 700 employees. Onsemi has inked a new lease to occupy 5701 N. Pima Road and partially occupy 5601 N. Pima Road for the next 14 years, according to CoStar.
As of Wednesday afternoon, space at 5601 N. Pima Road is not on the market for sublease, according to CoStar. A third building at 5801 N. Pima Road, is occupied by Zelle, and Early Warning Systems leased for their headquarters.
Chaparral Commerce Center also includes a third building leased to Zelle/Early Warning Services. The three-building campus was built by Ryan Cos., which then sold the properties to Griffin Capital Essential Asset REIT Inc upon completion. The three buildings are currently listed on the market for sale by Cushman & Wakefield.
Eric Wichterman, vice chairman at Cushman & Wakefield and one of the investment sales brokers marketing the property for sale, said McKesson has “a very small amount of space” that it is leasing at Chaparral Commerce Center. Wichterman said his team is marketing the properties both as a portfolio of three buildings and as three separate offerings. 5601 N. Pima Road, 5701 N. Pima Road and 5801 N. Pima Road have asking prices of $33.17 million$40.2 million and $35.45 million, according to LoopNet.
