CHARLESTON — Amy Lilly, Deals In Heels Realtor working under Huntington-based Realty Exchange commercial and residential brokerage, says when she received an email from a casting associate from the HGTV show “House Hunters,” she thought it was fake.
“I did some research and found out it was, in fact, legit,” Lilly said.
“House Hunters” gives viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what may be the biggest financial and emotional purchase of a person’s life — buying a new home. From touring open houses to making offers, each half-hour episode shows the experience of finding and purchasing a new home.
Lilly says she had two daughter in the process of buying homes and wanted to include them, but the timing didn’t align for them to do so.
“I was also working with a fabulous single mom who was in the same boat as my daughters. She was on the hunt for a new home, looking to relocate from Huntington to Charleston to be closer to family,” Lilly said. “Her mom, the ultimate house-hunting sidekick, joined her in this exciting journey.”
Ashli Loy and her mom, Chris Thomas, will appear with Lilly on the show at 10 p.m., Oct. 27, titled “Getting Quirky in West Virginia.”
The episode’s official description reads, “A single mom looks to buy her first home so her young son can be closer to family in Charleston, West Virginia. She’s focused on finding an older home that’s as quirky as she is, but her mom thinks she should find something that’s lower maintenance.”
Loy said when Lilly asked her to be on the show, she was skeptical at first.
“Amy asked me if I would join her on ‘House Hunters’ and I said yes, thinking that it wouldn’t really happen,” she said.
The show’s premise has Loy visiting homes in the Charleston area before deciding on which she may want to buy.
Due to confidentiality agreements so that viewers will tune in, Lilly and Loy aren’t allowed to tell what happens or if she buys a home.
“I can say filming the episode was fun and will be a wonderful memory that I can share with my family,” Loy said.
“Filming the episode was nerve-wracking at first. I had no idea what to expect,” Lilly said. “Then I realized I’m just being me, and that’s who I’m going to be. The buyer’s mom and I burst into giggles, and it escalated into such infectious laughter that we had tears streaming down our faces. Kudos to the film crew, true pros. They let us savor the moment before bringing us back on track.”
Lilly says she doesn’t know what to expect when she watches the episode.
“When I watch the show on Oct. 27 at 10 p.m. on HGTV, I’ll be seeing it for the first time, just like everyone else,” she said. “It’s actually making me more nervous than filming the show.”
Lilly says her love for real estate was ignited when she was a little girl.
“It’s in my blood, you could say. Watching my father build houses, sell mobile homes, manage multi-family properties, flip houses, own rentals and even run a real estate company with multiple offices,” she said. “I’ve seen it all, done it all and then some. From being an agent care administrator to an MLS (Multiple Listing Service) director and agent trainer, I’ve worn many hats in this industry.”
Lilly is a member of the Huntington Board of Realtors, Kanawha Valley Board of Realtors, West Virginia Association of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors.
“I’m well-connected in the industry,” she said. “Plus, I’m a proud member of the Multi-Million Dollar Club for 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. And I was Rookie of the Year in 2018.”
Lilly said her goal on being on House Hunters is to prove that West Virginia is really “Almost Heaven.”
“Living here is even better than TV portrays,” she said. “We’re a friendly and hardworking. Selling real estate in West Virginia is my absolute passion, and I’m here for the long haul, doing it all with flair and style in my heels.”
Lilly says navigating West Virginia’s housing market takes a lot of hard work.
“The market is doing good. Many houses are getting more than one offer. But, there aren’t enough nice houses for sale in the area,” she said. “Maintaining a pulse on current market trends, leveraging digital marketing for broader reach, continuous learning through regular training, and nurturing swift client communication for prompt action on listed properties are key strategies to navigate the current real estate landscape.”
Shane Radcliff, broker and owner of Realty Exchange, said he was proud to have one of his top agents on a national television show.
“Amy has been using social media for years to showcase her business, and apparently it has paid off by being found by ‘House Hunters,’” he said. “I look forward to watching the show and seeing which house her clients pick along with the rest of America.”
Since its inception “House Hunters” has spawned 17 spinoffs, but the original still remains popular. It is HGTV’s fifth-ranked show with nearly a million people watching each episode.
If you miss Lilly and her client’s quest for her dream home, you can go to www.hgtv.com and search for the episode to see when the network will air it again. It’s listed as the seventh episode of season 241.
