With record heat threatening a good chunk of the country and smoke-filled air making life difficult in other places, doesn’t a lakeside getaway sound pretty good right now?
You know the saying: “When the going gets tough, the tough head to the lake.”
And we have some excellent options for you. Better yet, all are priced below $500,000. Some are tiny, as small as 427 square feet. Others are very generously sized—we found one that can comfortably sleep about 13 people!
So crank the AC, and pour yourself a tall glass of lemonade while you enjoy a look at these five lakeside dwellings.
Party in the back: Discreet from the street, booming from the back, this two-bedroom, one-bath, 900-square-foot cottage backs right up to Maine’s picturesque Sheepscot Lake, with swimming, fishing, and boating just out your back door.
Take in views of the lake from the balcony and the large picture windows. The sightlines are even better from the deck, just a couple of steps from the water. There’s also a dock for your boat.
Inside this shingled cabin, originally built in 1950, you’ll find a high-beamed ceiling over an open-concept kitchen, dining, and living room area. A wood stove keeps you warm on colder nights, and fans overhead keep you cool on warmer days.
In addition to the two bedrooms, there are additional sleeping quarters in an alcove off the great room, making it an even greater room. The getaway is located halfway between Augusta and the coast of Maine.
Built-in beauty: This pretty lakefront property is surrounded by picturesque views from wraparound porches on three sides. Inside, take in the stained-glass windows, hardwood floors, cathedral ceilings, bay windows with seating and storage, and a tastefully renovated bath.
If you like to cook, you’ll love the unique double oven that was recently installed. Inside the home’s 860 square feet of living space, there are two bedrooms and one bath. Outside there’s a workshop and extra storage facilities, plus a welcoming fire pit where you can relax by the water for hours.
This petite home is located in a gated community on Lake Ioni, which features a beach swimming area, a gun range, and a community garden. The property spans two grassy, wooded lots and is situated about two hours from Waco or Dallas—a perfect getaway.
Fully family-friendly: This three-bedroom, two-bath, recreational paradise has so many upsides. Those include 105 feet of waterfront and a multilevel party-deck structure with a boatlift and dock.
Located right on the waters of Priest Lake at Pinto Point, the property offers plenty of room for friends and family. Because in addition to the three bedrooms (one of them a swanky primary suite), there’s a large bunkhouse that sleeps seven. Those bunks, and most of the rest of the furniture, are included in the list price.
There’s also a separate shop/garage for several vehicles on this wooded, half-acre peninsula property. There are several lease options available.
Get to the point: This classic A-frame is perfect for a weekend getaway on Columbia Lake, with its inviting stone fireplace, generous lake views, and cozy sleeping loft.
The updated one-bedroom, one-bath, 427-square-foot space comes with a new septic system, newer roof, and siding. The property is expanded by a large deck that connects the house to the dock down on the water, and a separate outdoor grilling area comes with a stone table and benches.
The locale is a short drive from Deposit, NY, with its shops and restaurants. Plus, the cabin is just minutes away from the 700-acre Columbia Lake State Forest.
Luxury on the lake: This beautifully remodeled, three-bedroom, two-bath, high-end home sits right on Lake Ozark, on one of the most popular areas of the water.
It’s one of the larger lake houses on our list, measuring 1,632 square feet. It features both hardwood and luxury vinyl plank flooring and new, low-maintenance composite decking. The remodeled kitchen is a showstopper, with its high-grade, stainless-steel appliances, quartz countertops, and dining peninsula.
It looks like it would be an ideal vacation rental, when you’re not staying there yourself. So much of it has been recently refreshed, including the interior paint and lighting. The owners will even put a new roof on it before you move in! What more could you ask for?
