2 children reportedly shot by father in Chandler home in stable condition, father identified – Arizona's Family

CHANDLER, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – Two children are in stable condition after Chandler police say their father shot them and then himself in a home Saturday night.
Chandler police responded to a home near Queen Creek Road and Alma School Road just before 8 p.m. after a woman called saying her two kids were reportedly shot. Officers arrived and found three people with gunshot wounds. Investigators say the woman and two children were home when their husband and father, later identified as 52-year-old Derek Aaron Tighe, showed up unannounced at their home.
“The 9-1-1 caller, which was the mother of the home, advised that her two children had been shot,” said Chandler Police Sergeant Jason McClimans. “There is some history of domestic violence early this year. But with the incident that happened in Phoenix in the last couple of days, now this incident everybody should be hugging their children right now.”
A domestic violence incident happened, and that was when Tighe reportedly shot his two children and then himself at the home. The mother was not hurt. He was pronounced dead at the scene, his two children were taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition.
“I see a very normal family. The guy is friendly. So I’m very shocked to learn the situation of the tragedy that happened yesterday,” said neighbor Shize Yang.
Chandler police are investigating what led to the shooting but said there is a history of domestic violence at the home. Officers say there may be further information released as the investigation continues this week.
“Domestic violence is a family issue it’s a community issue so holding space and providing trauma-informed resources for the family, especially for the children, is so crucial in ensuring that they’re able to display resiliency and be able to continue to have healthy, successful lives,” said Myriah Mhoon, CEO of New Life Center.
